Tweets From Space...

Forget global! Social media has gone universal! Astronauts all over the world are communicating to us from outer space via social media, making the galaxy a little more close to home. These astronauts are creating a personal vibe to the adventure of space travel for those of us who may never get the experience. These space travelers are using social networks like Twitter, Instagram, Reddit, Pinterest, YouTube and many others to connect and engage users of social media all over the world. (Knoblauch 2013). This one on one perspective of the galaxy would be near impossible without the convenience of social media.

So what exactly do the post, tweets, and statuses look like from outer space and what are the astronauts talking about? Here’s a glimpse; “From orbit: Launch was awesome!! I am feeling great, working hard, & enjoying the magnificent views, the adventure of a lifetime has begun!” – Mike Massimino (Knoblauch 2013). This was the very first tweet made from space. It was posted on May 12, 2009, and since then, many other tweets have followed. Astronauts are not only writing about their space journey but they are trying new things in space that have never been done, and posting it all over social media. Chris Hadfield found an exciting way to bring his space journey to a close by making the very

first galaxy music video. It opens the world to something completely fresh and exhilarating. His video was posted on May 12, 2013, and has received 17.2 million views (Knoblauch 2013).

“Google Hangout, live from space” (Knoblauch 2013). The astronauts take questions from viewers on YouTube and other social media networks via Google Hangout while chilling out in space. Two viewers from Unit high school in Iowa asked, “What is the exact purpose of having humans live on a space station?” (Knoblauch 2013) The astronaut explained, “The purpose of a space station is to have a place where people can take their ideas” – Kevin Ford (Knoblauch 2013). He went on explain how they have a huge power supply, a lot of rack space, and scientists who are constantly thinking of new ideas about things to do in space and literately hundreds of experiments going on right now. – Kevin Ford (Knoblauch 2013). Tom Marshburn another astronaut responded to another question. He stated that they also see shooting stars in space, but instead of seeing them above the head, they see them underneath. There were a lot of interesting topics brought up in the space chat via Google Hangout.

Our global view just got bigger and went beyond our minds eye. Social media is taking us on a far greater journey than any of us could have ever known without it. Just think of what we will see, share and experience in the coming years, all because of a network that has formed a window to the world and now, the physical universe. That window is social media.
